Laminate wood flooring has become very popular in recent years because it provides a room the beauty of hardwood at a much lower price than real hardwood floors. It's very durable and available in a wide variety of hardwood patterns.

This technology uses a photograph of the actual wood that is laminated under clear layers of a durable scratch resistant material called melamine. The top layers can even be texturized to mimic wood grain. The result is a very convincing simulation of natural hardwood that can last for many years.

Pricing

While hardwoods can vary vastly in price and availability depending on the kind of wood, laminate floors are available with virtually any wood grain without steep changes in price associated with the species of wood, so your options are quite extensive. Differences in price mainly reflect the quality of the flooring. Low to moderate quality laminate floors range from 7 to 10mm thick. Better quality products is 12mm, but they'll be a little more expensive.

Installation

Slats of laminate flooring can be easily installed without the need to tear up existing floor boards, so they're ideal for do-it-yourself projects. Some require glue to install, others are held in place by the tension of the adjoining slats. Just lay down the slats and make sure they lock into place and you're finished.

Caring for Laminate Flooring

Generally speaking, laminate floors are relatively low maintenance. It's important to keep them clean so they don't get scratched by dirt and dust over time, but because the wearing surface is smooth, it's easy to keep them clean by sweeping and mopping regularly. It's important not to let water stand on laminate flooring for extended amounts of time or it could stain.
